Saints and Scoundrels Review
25th October 2009 Independent on Sunday
Who knows which of her celebrated collaborators count as saints and which as scoundrels but, as ever, it takes a cast of interesting mates to conduct Shannon’s sound from trad-style instrumental to R&B knees up. Imelda May is here as is Shane MacGowan plus a den of hoarse bandits called The Cartoon Thieves. But perhaps the most affecting cut is the drifting, trickling “Saints and Angels”, featuring an original cast of Waterboys. Uncomplicated fun for all. NC
Sharon's superb performance with The Waterboys
on the Late Late Show on Irish national television last week:
“For her latest studio album Saints and Scoundrels, Irish accordion legend Sharon Shannon has come up with and enjoyable quirky, lively combination of the traditional Celtic sounds she’s known for and a range of other styles from tango to waltz to Chilean and dance rhythms. She’s aided by guest artists including Shane MacGowan in what is an infectious, toe-tapping, fun album. It’s out tomorrow on the Independent Records Label (in UK).”

NOT TO BE MISSED
After the major quadruple-platinum selling success of The Galway Girl Album and her two Meteor awards, Sharon's new studio album includes several newly penned tracks by Sharon and boasts many special guests including Shane MacGowan, Imelda May, Jerry Fish, Carol Keogh (Automata), Justin Adams (Robert Plant Band), Jack O Grady and introducing the mighty Cartoon Thieves.
One of the instrumentals, ‘CAPE CLEAR’, features in new Neil Jordan movie ONDINE in which Sharon stars as herself alongside Colin Farrell. This will be premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2009.
One of the standout tracks is ‘SAINTS & ANGELS’ written by chief Waterboy Mike Scott. This track was written for Fisherman’s Blues but was never included on the album. The new recording features a part reunion of that classic 1989 line-up that includes Mike, Steve Wickham, Anthony Thistlethwaite and Sharon.
Once again the variety and talent of the guests who contribute on Sharon’s ‘Saints & Scoundrels’ new release serves to highlight her musical versatility, wide appeal and huge respect from within the musical community.
